In Which Silvia Learns About Brandy Melville

Look, we all have our blind spots. Our lacunae, if you will. Things we hear about but don’t care to investigate further because it seems like a lot of effort for very little payoff. Today I finally interrogated one of mine: the clothing brand Brandy Melville.

I’ll admit: I had heard the name before, perhaps in the context of social media? Was Brandy Melville a person? Possibly. On Instagram? Almost definitely. The name sounded like two Instagram filters got married and had a thin, blonde model of a child who bears a slight resemblance to Jenni Garth. She doesn’t wear makeup and she never needs a bra. And she’s 100% American.

It turns out I was not completely wrong!!! Today’s investigation arose because of a conversation about what everyone was wearing while blogging:
