Will We Ever See the Sun Again?

A survey of those in the know.

When was the last time we saw the sun? I don’t remember. If I had to guess it would be either months ago or years ago, which I know leaves a wide estimation gap but it’s the best I can do. Will we ever see it again? I don’t think so but let me see.

Will we ever see the sun again? Dennis Mersereau, author of Extreme Weather (Outdoor Life): 214 Tips for Surviving Nature’s Worst, said:

“Hope springs eternal!”

Will we ever see the sun again? Dr. Frederick House, professor emeritus at Drexel University who taught a class I took in 2009 called Weather I: Climate and Global Change, said:

“Fear not, the sun is shining even though the skies are cloudy and gray, and raining right now in a Noreaster coastal storm. The upper air flow basically controls what weather events take place at the surface. In this storm, the upper sir trough is supporting the low pressure along the coast. The trough is in a perfect position just west of Pittsburg with plenty of energy for the storm. The weather for next Wednesday are sunny conditions followed by partly to mostly cloudy conditions for 5 days or more.”

Will we ever see the sun again? Gil Simmons, Chief Meteorologist for New Haven’s WTNH NEWS8, said:

“Hi!!!!!

It will be sunny tomorrow!!!! Not sure what you are looking for?”

Will we ever see the sun again? Dan Amarante, certified Broadcast Meteorologist for FOX 61 (WTIC) in Hartford, CT, said:

“We absolutely will see the sun again! Wednesday we’ll have a good amount of sunshine around New York and much of the northeast. Overall, a much quieter weather pattern will be setting up for Wednesday, and will continue through the weekend. Also, because we’re past the winter solstice, the sun sets roughly a minute later with each passing day.”

Will we ever see the sun again? Al Roker, Husband, father, Live Streamer, Co-Anchor-@TODAYshow. Pres/CEO: Al Roker Entertainment Inc & @Rokerlabs @RKRmedia, said:

“Nope!! Next Ice Age on the way. Don’t mind the wooly mammoths on your front lawn.”

Will we ever see the sun again? Dr. Glennys Farrar, Physics professor at New York University, said:

“One fact that might interest your readers, is that if the nuclear burning in the Sun turned off today, it would take of order 10,000 years until we knew it — due to the fact that the photons carrying the solar energy out of the center of the sun bounce around on their way out, so it takes that long to reach the surface.

So — we’ll for sure see the sun again, since we know from other evidence that the nuclear burning of the Sun has not shut down (nor would we expect it to!).”

Will we ever see the sun again? Kurt Aaron, Chief Meteorologist at Scranton, Pennsylvania’s WNEP Newswatch 16, said:

“I just got this e-mail, I’m 16 Chief Meteorologist Kurt Aaron. To answer your question, ‘YES!’ We should see some peeks of sunshine tomorrow afternoon along with afternoon temperatures in the 40s. It’s NEPA weather! Last Sunday we had sunshine along with afternoon temps in the upper 50s (very April like). 24 hours later we had a winter storm baring down on us with snow, sleet and freezing rain. Snowfall totals ranged from a coating to 8″ of snow.”

Will we ever see the sun again? Anthony Broccoli, Environmental Sciences professor at Rutgers and co-director of the Rutgers Climate Institute, said:

“Good question. I expect the prospects for sun will improve as the week goes on, but I’ve taken matters into my own hands by flying to Seattle for the annual conference of the American Meteorological Society. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day here.”

Will we ever see the sun again? Noreen Clark, Meteorologist at Scranton, Pennsylvania’s WNEP Newswatch 16, said:

“Yes, we will see the sun again when strong, cold, dry Canadian air (from a H pressure center) arrives in the city to clear out the clouds.

In the winter many times we see the coldest temperatures when the sky clears out.

Other times we are in a warm sector prior to a cold front arriving, and have sunshine with mild temperatures. Then the cold front arrives with precipitation. It is followed by a wind shift behind the front to the West/Northwest with cooler temperatures & hopefully some sunshine (if the Lake Effect snow doesn’t kick in with a Northwest wind).”

Will we ever see the sun again? A follow-up email from Gil Simmons, Chief Meteorologist for New Haven’s WTNH NEWS8, said:

“Actually Annie said it best!

The sun will come out tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow
There’ll be sun

Will we ever see the sun again? Tom Scocca, former Vine user and current weather reviewer, said:

“Eventually the sun in its death throes will swell to become a red giant, which would first manifest itself as a lurid coral-pink glow through the clouds and would then intensify until the clouds and the rest of the atmosphere burned away and we once again, now through nothing but the void of space, stood face to face with our sun.”
