Jess Walter’s ‘Beautiful Ruins’ Is Going To Be a [Great] Movie

by Bobby Finger

Jess Walter’s sublime 2012 novel ‘Beautiful Ruins’ is being adapted for the big screen by Todd Field, and you should all be very excited for these two reasons:

  • Walter’s novel tells the interweaving stories of fictional characters affected by filming of a very real movie (Cleopatra) and its very real stars (Richard Burton and Liz Taylor).
  • Todd Field has already directed two brilliant literary adaptations — In the Bedroom and Little Children.

‘Beautiful Ruins’ was my favorite novel of 2012. Now just give me a Nicole Holofcener adaptation of ‘The Middlesteins’ and I’ll be in paradise.
