Cronuts Are Like Donuts Only You Wait in Line For Them
A Manhattan bakery now offers the “cronut,” which is like a doughnut-croissant hybrid that is filled with a cream filling, I guess? Dominique Ansel’s shop only makes 200–250 a day at $5 a pop, and they’re in such high demand that rich people reportedly pull up in SUVs and buy pastries off the line-waiters at a $30 markup. They must be good! Ansel himself doesn’t really seem to understand the craze, which has already involved crying and lots of misplaced anger. From an Eater Q&A:
What I’ve learned is that it’s very difficult to make everybody happy. What I’ve learned is that it’s one thing to make one product, but also people have to see it in a different way. We have so many great items on the menu… We don’t only have one product that is special and unique, we have a lot more.
When I was 18 or so I came to New York and got a Magnolia Bakery cupcake because Carrie Bradshaw told me to. But I am wise and lazy now. I will not wait in line for your cronuts, Mr. Ansel.
