Candle Event: Miley Cyrus’s Mom’s Candles

The latest event in The Hairpin’s popular candle column.

It’s important, now and then, to break out of your “comfort zone.” To climb a mountain (not really). To run with the bulls (not really). To go on a date (not really). To attend a candle event for Miley Cyrus’s mom’s new candle company in the penthouse of a hotel in SoHo (this one is fine).

Tish Cyrus, mother to Miley et al., began Original Scent with her best friend Nicole Winnaman because she likes candles and she thought it would be fun, which sounds like a fine enough reason to me. As a matter of fact, that is exactly the reason why I will eventually start a candle company with former Gawker editor Alex Balk called Balk Candles and the tagline will be “Buy them in Balk!” Tish is also going to star in an upcoming reality show on Bravo.

Yesterday, Tish and Nicole hosted an event for various members of the candle media (Kelly Conaboy) and various members of the media in general (others) to acquaint themselves with their line of candles and have mimosas. Here’s me talking about it now.

WERE YOU ACTUALLY INVITED BECAUSE OF YOUR CANDLE REVIEWS OR WERE YOU INVITED THROUGH A LOOPHOLE MADE AVAILABLE BY YOUR WORK FOR VARIOUS NEW YORK MAGAZINE BLOGS AND A FRIEND YOU HAVE WHO WAS LIKE, WANNA GO TO THIS?

Pass on this question.

IS ONE MIMOSA AND A FREE CANDLE LITERALLY ALL IT TAKES FOR YOU TO WRITE WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A PRESS RELEASE FOR MILEY CYRUS’S MOM’S CANDLE COMPANY?

Pass on this question.

HOW WERE THE CANDLES?

“Finally, a good question!” — Donald Trump. (He once said something like this.) I hope I can say this without sounding to rude, but — or, OK. I’ll say this: I wasn’t sure what to expect from Miley Cyrus’s mom’s candle company. The candles have names like “Happy Hippie” and “Hashtag High” and “Happy Hour” and “Man Cave” and “Cherry Chapstick,” etc. So, you know. It’s hard to say what that’s gonna be like. And most scented candles are bad.

I will say I hated a few of them, not to be rude, specifically “Happy Hippie,” which I was told is Miley’s favorite, so my apologies to Miley. Some of them were far too sweet. Sort of like what you expect when you pick up a candle that you know for sure is going to be bad. But here’s the other thing I will say —

— Some of them were pretty good!

WHICH ONES?

I took these candles away from the event because they were my favorites: “Morocco,” “Honey,” and “Royal Tea.” Of those I recommend “Honey” the most. Here is the description:

Our Signature Honey Blossom candle is a mouth watering infusion of fresh honey suckle sweetened with a light floral note. A simply gorgeous fragrance.

It simply is a gorgeous fragrance! It is a surprising delight. It smells like when you go outside in springtime in like LA, or wherever, and you’re like, “Why doesn’t it smell like this in New York?,” and the answer is because there’s no honeysuckle planted all around in New York. Why is there no honeysuckle planted all around in New York? Well, I don’t know the answer for that one.

Also I’m not sure I would describe this or any candle as mouth-watering.

IS IT A SPRING CANDLE?

Yes!

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The candle I have is travel sized, and the travel sized candles cost $18. For the sake of expediency I’d say this one is pretty much worth $18, or maybe a little less. Maybe $15. Also the burn time is 15 hours which so far seems correct.

HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU HAVE TO GO AROUND AND SMELL ALL OF THE CANDLES AND PRETEND IT WAS THE FIRST TIME?

Three. Once with the publicist, ones with Tish, and once with Nicole.

WHAT SORT OF THINGS DID YOU SAY ABOUT THE SCENTS TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE IT WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU WERE SMELLING THEM?

“Oh, I like that one.” “That one is a little too sweet for me, I think.” “Oh, this one is really nice.”

WAS IT HARD TO GET TO THE PENTHOUSE FLOOR?

Yes, the elevator wouldn’t go to that floor so I had to figure out another way.

HOW DID YOU DO IT?

The stairs!

DID YOU GO TO LUNCH AFTER?

Yes, I went to lunch with my friend!

SCORE:

  • Two passes
  • Seven checks
  • One not food
  • One three
  • One good job

Pretty good!
