Monks, “Higgle-Dy Piggle-Dy”
by Alexandra Molotkow
Every day the downstairs neighbors in the building I’m writing from play the same song, over and over and over, on guitar, bass, and drums. It’s an unexceptional, midday radio-rock song, a serviceable theme for a sporting event, but not one of the popular sports. Maybe a badminton tournament. While it doesn’t sound the least bit complicated, the neighbors seem to have difficulty getting the chord changes straight, or maybe it’s the bassist who keeps losing the rhythm. They stop and start and stop and start, repeat a part, then fall back to the central riff for a few dozen more takes. Maybe it’s just a very long song.
The good news is it sounds a teeny tiny bit like this Monks song, which itself sounds good loud.
