Die Antwoord Has a Half-Life of One Year

When I first heard South African rave-rap group Die Antwoord in February of 2010, I thought they were awesome. Their ridiculous “Enter the Ninja” video was perversely sexy and hypnotic — plus their tattoos, bodies, and haircuts were good to look at, and the sounds that came out of their mouths felt like little chunks of crystal alien geometry — but in the year that’s followed they’ve stagnated, driving away fans with their impenetrably smug public personas (which might come with being signed by Interscope, I guess, but no one should be a jerk) and, to me at least, generally worn out their welcome. Not unlike Lady Gaga. Although I still kind of want to stop time and teleport to wherever frontwoman Yo-Landi Vi$$er is and get her drunk and learn her secrets and make her like me. How tall are you, Yo-Landi? Are you so tiny?
