Don’t Call It Cali
This weekend I was so bad and slept in really, really late; have you guys tried sleeping? It’s so nice! Two thumbs up, would sleep again. Anyway, I slept late, kind of stumbled around for awhile, ate breakfast around 1:00pm, and then for some reason felt compelled to look up what time sunset was. Sunset was at 4:37pm. I felt, like, bereft; how could I survive on only three hours of daylight in my eyeballs? I mean, I know this is my punishment for choosing to live on this side of this big dumb planet, and daylight savings happens literally every year, winter happens every year, there is nothing more boring than whining or complaining about the inevitable, but goddamn.
In retaliation I put on this playlist from The New Inquiry — it’s a collection of songs to listen to while you read their California issue, and it’s great — and I just thought really, really hard about beach parties and bikinis and sunshine and it almost made everything better.
Later I was so bad again and stayed up until 5:00am and cheerfully suggested to my friends that we wait and watch the sunrise; how much longer could that be? When I looked it up sunset was scheduled for 7:36am. Upon realizing that we all went to bed immediately. And that was my entire weekend! Hopefully yours was slightly less consumed by darkness.
