Weekend Roundup / Open Thread / A Picture of Boobs

WELCOME TO THE END OF THE WEEK (*a million hands clapping emojis*). Let’s look back: we assimilated, celebrated Susie Carmichael, wrote letters to our future daughters, considered Gone Girl as a rom-com, finally got our October horoscopes, worked at Hot Dog on a Stick, stood with Texas women, interviewed Eva Michon, heard from Baba Yaga, talked about Toronto, got some new book recommendations with cocktails to match, broke out of the flesh prisons that are our bodies, and, as always, got great advice from a queer chick.

Last night, Haley and I hosted the first pinup of Hairpin 3.0, and it was a smashing success. Haley glided around with her leather jacket perched precariously upon her fashionable shoulders; I wore a t-shirt and implored everyone to watch Living Single (which you SHOULD) (it’s on YouTube!) (that’s your weekend homework assignment). I’ll probably never make an Oscars speech, so here’s the first and last time I’ll say this: there are so many people to thank *clutches scrap of paper surreptitiously in hand because, like, yeah, I knew I was gonna win this.* Seriously, thank you all for coming, and an emphatic thank you to hostess extraordinaire Marie Luongo, who also had the best lipstick game of the evening (though it was a very close call). My favorite part of last night was when a bunch of women and I were on line for the bathroom, when, like how most horror stories begin, a man emerged from the shadows. He struck up a conversation: “Oh, this is a meet up for, like, feminists? That’s cool… but wouldn’t it be better if there were some men here too? To help the cause?” I opened my mouth to say “lol good impression of a stupid person” but every single woman around me tore him a new one and he ran away. You are all powerful witches, and I love it. (Also: did you know that Awl pals Choire Sicha and Mike Dang [blurrily photographed above] showed up as well, in the exact same outfits as Haley and I???? Birds of a feather.)

The woman I’m proudest of this week is undoubtedly Malala Yousafzai, now the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Goddamn, goddamn. Here’s a Vanity Fair profile on her; read it and try to embody some of her strength during your weekend. We’ll see you back here Monday.
