Who Owns the Monkey Selfie?
In 2011, a nature photographer went to Indonesia, where an endangered black macaque monkey found his camera and took “hundreds of selfies”; Wikipedia has apparently placed the famous image in the Wikimedia Commons on the grounds that the monkey, and not the photographer, owns the copyright.
Mr Slater now faces an estimated £10,000 legal bill to take the matter to court. “If the monkey took it, it owns copyright, not me, that’s their basic argument. What they don’t realise is that it needs a court to decide that,” he said.
