Janet Jackson, “Someone to Call My Lover” (Giraffage Remix)
Today is Very Monday, isn’t it? Even musically. I refuse to look into this first one too deeply, but I guess people are hating on Beyonce for not being “_____” enough, and over the weekend there was that very dumb piece about her album and then a great takedown of the way black creative power is often blindly sublimated into white appropriation (“French fries do not influence potatoes”) but the whole thing inevitably leaves you sort of tired and sad, and then there’s also this sickening Village Voice piece that indicts R. Kelly and his privileged enablers (a mass in which I count myself), featuring this sit-up-and-pay-attention line: “The saddest fact I’ve learned is nobody matters less to our society than young black women. Nobody.”
I am taking brief refuge in this awesome remix that came out this past spring but still slaps; also a full chopped-and-screwed version of the Beyonce album, courtesy of Myles; also, on a different note, Burial’s great new Kindred EP.
