Playboy and Prada in Marfa, TX: Which is Art, Which is Advertising?
What do you think? Here’s a piece at Texas Monthly about the ongoing debate in Marfa, TX, a tiny, austere, majority-Hispanic town that’s become an art-world pilgrimage site. I went to Marfa over the summer for a (local) wedding and thought the incredible, hallucinatory border landscape seemed not just unmarred but enhanced by both of these logo-centric installations. Which is to say, I hope they don’t kill either of them over the Highway Beautification Act. But this debate is maybe less art vs. commerce than insiders vs. outsiders, and at least the bunny (whose case turns over to the state attorney general on December 23rd) seems like it’s got to go.
