Zola Jesus, “Avalanche (Slow)”
Last year, Zola Jesus, known purveyor of witch-house industrial music, teamed up with producer J.G. Thirlwell to arrange 10 of her songs for a string quartet in advance of a performance at the Guggenheim. They’ve recorded these profoundly reworked tracks for an album called Versions, to be released August 19 on Sacred Bones — and this one, “Avalanche,” is spare, cinematic, hopeful and mournful at the same time.
