The College Course on “Criminal”

…the reality is that this song, in a perfect world, should have been praised beyond the parameters of its meaning. This isn’t some vapid song with an excuse to be overly sexualized. From a bird’s-eye view it both flashes a mirror at our society’s inability to handle girl’s and young women’s sexuality (why should Apple feel like a criminal when a man probably wouldn’t when partaking in the same thing?) while also providing a small but detailed glimpse into the sexual guilt that women are more prone than men to possess. A college course on this song and video could be done.

I would take that class. (When you search for “Criminal” on Spotify, the second song that pops up after Apple’s is by Britney Spears. Makes for an interesting segue.) [via]
