Being [Something] in the United States
So, this guy, Robert Huber, wrote “Being White in Philly” for Philadelphia Magazine. His friend and colleague wrote “Why I Hope You Won’t Read ‘Being White in Philly’”. Michael Coard wrote “Philly Mag’s ‘Being White in Philly’ Is Really Being Wrong in Philly”. Clutch Magazine had their own response.
On a mostly unrelated note, the homeless woman who put her babysitter’s address on a form to get her son into a better school is going to jail for several years for “felony larceny”, because black people don’t like having their kids in terrible schools any more than white people do. She also sold some pot.
I don’t have a lot to say about Huber, the linked articles do a good job of that, but I will say that he seems to operate under the curious delusion that being a white man who writes about black people as a cultural and racial monolith is very brave.
And, of course, Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote “The Good, Racist People”, possibly without even reading the Huber piece.
