Jane Marie, What’s Actually in Your Makeup Bag Right Now?
alJane Marie, What’s Actually in Your Makeup Bag Right Now?
This is the closest we’re ever gonna get to a haul video, y’all. Enjoy it!
Already, I have a huge caveat: this question is forcing me to ignore the giant, currently disheveled makeup case that has single-handedly saved my bathroom from ruin. When I first got it, I thought I’d probably dip into it every day, but it’s turned out to serve more as a storage unit for samples, doubles, and things I don’t use that often.
Here’s a brief summary of what you’ll find in there: glittery crap, fake eyelashes, off-season shades of foundation, aubergine and neon pink lipsticks, brushes galore, broken/messy stuff I still love but don’t want to spill all over the place, light blue eye shadow, and products I don’t really like or ever use, but can’t throw away for reasons including I keep thinking I’ll give them to my sister, but she lives in Nashville and I live in LA and I am not as good as I want to be about mailing boxes to people.
As for my actual makeup bag, it’s not even a single bag. I keep makeup in three places:
— A certifiable makeup bag I got from Prescriptives years ago which holds mostly tools and dry things that don’t have to go in a Ziploc when I fly.
— A Ziploc full of wet stuff that lives on my bathroom counter between flights. Sometimes the wet stuff isn’t really in the bag, it’s next to the bag or on top of it. (And it’s not like I’m a crazy jet-setter, I just hate unpacking properly. Hi, Jolie!)
— Whichever tote or purse I’m carrying at the moment holds lip gloss, blush, and some sort of foundation or cover-up.
On to the booty!
My Forever Family (of products):
NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, SPF 30 in Alaska. This is my “first thing in the morning” jam now that I live in a sunny place. It’s got the most coverage I’ve found in a tinted moisturizer while still feeling like a lotion — and I’ve tried them all.
Make Up Forever HD Foundation in 120, 125, or 127, depending on how much I’ve been outside. I don’t see humans anymore, ever, so I only bust this out if I’m leaving the house.
Vincent Longo’s Concealer Brush #25 allows me to apply that foundation as, you guessed it, a concealer.
NARS Blush in Desire for winter and Orgasm for summer.
Benefit High Beam Highlighter, but only because I ran out of that Josie Maran one.
Illamasqua Lipstick in Matte Dusty Rose. It’s the one I used in both Edith and Lila’s makeovers.
Dior Addict Lipstick in a sheer pinky/coral for summer. They keep changing the names of their colors.
Laura Mercier Eye Basics in Light Ivory. I use this as an eye shadow primer or standalone, neutral shadow.
MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder. This is the darkest, softest (meaning maleable, meaning it goes on easily) black eyeliner I’ve found, which makes it best your waterline or tightlining.
Diorshow and Maybelline Great Lash mascaras in the blackest shades available. I kind of got over Diorshow for a minute because it’s SO obvious and sometimes clumpy, but then everything I found that showed up as clearly was a huge pain to take off each night, so. Right now I’m using Diorshow Extase — it’s supposed to make your lashes grow, but nothing really does that aside from Latisse — and it’s okay, but I’ll probably switch back to the classic when this one is gone.
Anastasia Brow Pencil in Dark Warm Brown or Warm Golden Brown, depending on if I have any highlights in my hair. Which I do right now because I just got my hair done like this yesterday.
Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner or Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner, depending on which is available at a store nearest to wherever I’ve run out of gel eyeliner.
This Jane Iredale Kabuki Brush for blush, MAC eye shadow brushes numbers 217 and 242, and this Sephora Pro Angled Liner Brush #22. I’ve had each one for many years — and I’m talking these same exact brushes, not duplicates.
Tweezerman Slant Tweezers and their Eyelash Curler.
Current Side-Pieces:
Lorac Pro Palette Eye Shadow. I also love Kat Von D’s palettes, but I broke or used all of them and decided to switch it up recently. I’ll probably go back as these colors are fine but a little boring.
Jouer Bronzer. I found this on the ground at a hotel bar. When it’s gone I’ll go back to the Soleil Tan de Chanel.
Revlon PhotoReady Powder and Eye Primer. Got these at CVS in an emergency and have kept using them — the primer under my eyes as it’s sort of like YSL’s Touche Eclat, and the powder to set my foundation on top of the some new, next-level zits I’ve created lately. I apply the powder with this All Over Brush from BH Cosmetics.
Buxom Stay-There Eye Shadow in Pug. I got this in one of those holiday gift sets that go on super sale every January at Sephora. It’s pretty and sparkly and creamy, but I probably won’t re-up once it’s gone.
Some FusionBeauty Lip Fusion Gloss They had this at T.J. Maxx for negative dollars. It’s fine. Lip gloss is the item I go through the fastest, so there’s a new brand/color in my bag every few weeks.
Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment. I put lip stuff on before bed — often just Vaseline or something like that — but this was at the checkout at Sephora one day so I’m trying it. It’s a tiny bit too tasty/smelly for bed time, but it is working.
Lancome Artliner in Noir. It’s easiest to apply with your eyes open. Not the best for cat eyes as the tip is a little too bendy for me to feel in control, but it gives a super dark and indelible line.
OH MY GOD, THAT IS SO MUCH SHIT. I’m sorry.
