Happy National Watermelon Day
According to a recent email, today is National Watermelon Day. A quick Google search backs this up — Watermelon day is “always on August 3,” per this grim website, which in turn links to the Watermelon Promotion Board, a site with a wonderful URL (watermelon dot org), and plenty of useful, watermelon-themed info, including a solid gallery of doable watermelon carvings (including this watermelon keg), and a handful of pink and friendly looking recipes. To continue the watermelon internet chain, the WPB links to What About Watermelon?, a blog that describes itself as “your one-stop online source for all the news and views about America’s favorite fruit.” And if you’ve got any free time this afternoon, there’s one day left to enter the Watermelon Carving Contest.
Also, in case you did not know (I did not), all kinds of watermelon seeds are edible. How will you be celebrating this day?? (If you’re in Massachusetts, Cambridge’s Cuchi Cuchi has a watermelon-jalapeno-vodka-blueberry cocktail — the “Some Like It Hot” — that’s a nice balance of spicy and not-sweet.)
