American History Cake

Cook’s Country tells the history of the United States in cake invention, from the Boston Creme Pie to the Smith Island Cake of Chesapeake Bay. One of the more-refreshing/jarring stops along the way is at the Stained Glass Cake (a.k.a. the Broken Glass Cake) of the 1950s, made with Jell-O cubes held in a semi-solid cream, gelatin, and pineapple juice mixture, and suspended over a graham-cracker crust. It appears to have been invented by the Jell-O company, although there’s not too tremendously much evidence online of anyone actually consuming or enjoying it. [Via]
