R.I.P. ROSAT

The end of the story that gripped the planet is that ROSAT, the 21-year-old German satellite on a lonely suicide dive back to earth, disintegrated over the Bay of Bengal early last Sunday, hitting no one, breaking nothing. “With the re-entry of ROSAT,” said an executive at the German Aerospace Center as a sort of verbal science obituary, “one of the most successful German scientific space missions has been brought to its ultimate conclusion.” Oh my god there was a Twitter account. Oh my god it Tweeted at Steve Martin.
