The Spider Silk … Rectangle

“Finding the people in Madagascar to do this work was also a challenge, because they get bitten, you know, on their hands, and it’s not something everyone wants to do.” Ah! But they did find some people who “wanted” to do it, and so now there’s a naturally yellow piece of fabric made from the silk of more than a million Golden Orb spiders. It was once on display at the American Museum of Natural History (above), it’s currently at the Art Institute of Chicago, and it’s heading to the Victoria & Albert Museum in England next year. What was also a challenge was getting the spiders to walk back and forth carefully enough that the cloth got made correctly!! “You go over him, he goes under you, she goes over you both.” Ahh OK moving on.
