How Animals Deal With Earthquakes

D.C. zoo animals apparently sensed Tuesday’s earthquake before we did, but what did they do about it?

A gorilla: “shrieked and grabbed her baby.”

Apes: “dropped their food.”

Flamingoes: “cluster[ed] together.”

An elephant: “made a low-pitched noise.”

Lemurs: “emitted an alarm cry.”

Snakes: “slithered.”

Beavers: “stood … and jumped into a pond.”

A Komodo dragon: “ran.”

Lions: “stood up and stared.”

A tiger: “leaped … but quickly settled down.”

A piranha: “gave visitors a strange look.”

Poison dart frogs: “were in their thing.”

(Last two are speculation.)
