Feed Me’s Dubstep Robyn Remix, “Call Your Girlfriend” (Also, Please, What Is Dubstep?)

Who is Feed Me? Feed Me is a dubstep musician who, among other things, remixes popular songs like Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend.” (Who is Robyn? Robyn is a beloved Swedish pop star who The Hairpin would jump off a bridge for if she asked, no questions.) What is dubstep, though, actually? That’s a question I’ve asked and heard the answer to, and nodded like I understood — uh huh, ohhh, OK — but have never actually understood. And still do not understand.

Wikipedia puts it like this:

Dubstep is [a] techno music genre … that originated in South East London. Its overall sound has been described as “tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals.”

Which dub STEPS in one ear and out the other for me. Urban Dictionary provides an array of slightly more helpful definitions, including,

Dubstep is music centred around bass.

And

A genre which is filthier than fingering your sister and finding your Dad’s wedding ring…

Or

the music that is created from transformers having sex

Which actually makes the most sense to me. In any case, love this song, love this remix. Especially love the way it starts. Also, does anyone have a definition of dubstep that simple people can understand? Besides the Transformers definition, “Techno music that sounds big and future-y” is what I’m working with. Or is dubstep like virginity in that you can kind of define it for yourself? In that case, what does dubstep mean to you? Are you there, dubstep? It’s The Hairpin.
