Gwyneth Paltrow’s complex PR campaign for Country Strong and gobbledy-GOOP and her cookbook and whatever else kind of took a turn — a diagonal back-pedal on a tricycle, if you will — into “Money can’t buy you happiness” territory recently: she’s putting herself down, insulting her unreliable coffee machine, admitting she “often fails” as a parent, and now telling us that her marriage to Chris Martin is “hard.” Or that marriage in general is hard, which isn’t to say hers is. But, she allows, in an interview in the latest Good Housekeeping, “Chris and I have had our ups and downs, big time.”

She adds:

Marriage is way more complicated than just who gets to control the remote.

Or who gets to drive the Porsche today. Or who gets to call the barista-for-hire to make the coffee while the coffee maker is getting fixed. Or who gets to love the Hamptons more. Or whose mind gets to control the mind-controllable TV.

To be fair, Gwyneth kind of actually lives, and breathes, and tears up about the fame monster, and cranes her neck suggestively, and poses while playing the guitar, in this interview. But the old celebrity adage remains true: If you don’t have anything interesting to say, shhhhhhh, and maybe the fame monster will go away, or at least be rendered unthreateningly small and furry and cute by your reticence.
