Finding Oneself in the Missing Persons Register
by Liz Colville
A woman who was abducted from a New York hospital in 1987 when she was three weeks old has been reunited with her mother. Carlina White had an inkling growing up that her “parents” might actually be baby thieves — she is believed to have been taken from Harlem Hospital by a woman posing as a nurse — and eventually she turned to the website of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, where she found a photo of a baby that she believed was her. It was! While the police are still investigating the abduction part of the case, a DNA test confirmed White’s belief that a Bronx-dwelling woman by the name of Joy White is indeed her mother. They were reunited last weekend, and White is now moving to New York from Georgia to be closer to her peeps.
