Trying Not to Jinx Things for Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi, the captive leader of Myanmar’s National League for Democracy party, is allegedly being freed today after a seven-year sentence and a grand total of 15 years under house arrest. But guess what, it’s nearly 10PM in Myanmar and Suu Kyi is apparently still negotiating the terms of her release with the military junta that currently rules the country. So she probably won’t be released today. The government is being cautious, given that Suu Kyi is supported by millions of people the world over and was the rightful winner of the country’s last democratically-held election — in 1990 — in a landslide. The junta is “attempting to restrict her ability to travel around the country and limit her freedom to meet supporters.” One more day better really be just one more day.
