Don’t Buy That Rapist. You’ll Just Regret It.

by Liz Colville

On this Sunday’s Meet the Press, Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck of Colorado was asked to discuss a 2005 date rape case that he decided not to prosecute during his time as District Attorney of Weld County, Colorado, a position he’s held since 2004. Buck is pro-life, and only supports abortion if the mother’s life is endangered (rape and incest being, in Buck’s view, not dangerous).

Last week, audio of Buck’s conversation with the woman appeared on the website of Progress Now, a liberal lobby group, and elsewhere. In it, he can be heard repeatedly encouraging her to drop the case, then telling her, “This could be interpreted as a case of buyer’s remorse” because she was regretful of her relationship with the accused. Well, yes, because he allegedly raped her.

Yesterday, pressed by David Gregory, Buck said he doesn’t regret the way he spoke to the victim and again used the term “buyer’s remorse.” This after Buck’s horrendous comments at the beginning of the segment comparing homosexuality to alcoholism. And on what women care about this election season, Buck said: “I think women as well as men are concerned about jobs and the economy and spending and other issues.” Spend, spend, spend, ladies! Just don’t buy anything you’ll regret!

But wait, there’s more! Buck is also the guy who was caught on video this summer saying, “Why should you vote for me? Because I do not wear high heels. I have cowboy boots. They have real bullshit on them.” Indeed!
